Today’s the day. The day you help save the internet from being ruined.
Yes, you are, and we’re ready to help you.
(Long story short: The FCC is about to make a critical decision as to whether or not internet service providers have to treat all traffic equally. If they choose wrong, then the internet where anyone can start a website for any reason at all, the internet that’s been so momentous, funny, weird, and surprising—that internet could cease to exist. Here’s your chance to preserve a beautiful thing.)
Hey free markets, if the ISP’s control bandwidth then they have the right to sell it to the highest bidder. That’s how business works.
As technology progresses more bandwidth will be affordable for the little websites, new ISP’s will enter the market with a competitive offer geared towards the smaller websites etc.
The internet is not some magical medium that should be free for everyone, having the internet is not a human right. It’s a product, just like anything else. The companies who’ve invested their money in creating the infrastructure get to decide what to do with it, if they start to act outside of what the market will allow then competitors will come in and offer consumers a better alternative.
The government should not be in the business of forcing companies to distribute their product democratically.
